The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Alfred H. Hughes (MCSN: 0-8392), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of Company F, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces at Cape Gloucester, New Britain on 27 December 1943. Handicapped by a driving rain the forces under the command of Captain Hughes were holding a precarious defensive position in the beachhead perimeter when Japanese forces attacked with heavy fire power and affected a penetration of the lines at one point. Courageously exposing himself to hostile fire, Captain Hughes personally led his men in the counter attack which resulted in the repulse of the enemy and restoration of the lines. His valor and brilliant leadership were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
