The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Platoon Sergeant Homer F. Huffstutter (MCSN: 321109), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Acting Leader of a Rifle Platoon of the Second Battalion, Fourth Marines, (Reinforced), First Provisional Marine Brigade during action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands on 27 July 1944. Encountering heavy enemy fire while moving his platoon forward in column, Platoon Sergeant Huffstutter suffered painful wounds in both legs. Struggling to his feet, he deliberately exposed himself in an effort to locate the enemy position and to divert their attention until his men had deployed and take cover. Refusing to be relieved or to receive first aid until his men were in position, he remained in action until ordered to be evacuated by his commanding officer. His aggressive fighting spirit and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Platoon Sergeant Huffstutter and the United States Naval Service.
