The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Arden A. Howey (MCSN: 268970), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the eighth Marines, SECOND Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands on 17 June 1944. When ammunition was desperately needed by troops on the front lines during hours of darkness, Sergeant Howey voluntarily led three trucks loaded with ammunition to the front lines, driving one truck himself over an unfamiliar road and through Japanese territory where grenades were thrown at the trucks. After assisting in unloading the trucks and in loading battle casualties for evacuation under enemy fire, he returned over the same hazardous route to the rear. By his courage and initiative, he enabled the troops to attack on schedule the following morning, thereby upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
