The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Terrol L. Hooper (MCSN: 307876), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Acting Platoon Sergeant of Company E, Second Battalion, Twenty-fourth Marines FOURTH Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands on 3 March 1945. After evacuating his wounded Platoon Leader and administering first aid to him, Sergeant Hooper twice again braved the deadly enemy fire to rescue a wounded Marine and assist a wounded stretcher bearer to safety. Then, assuming command of the platoon, he gallantly led his men in the attack and when wounded himself, refused to be evacuated until a replacement could be made. Sergeant Hooper’s courage, leadership and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
