The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Victor V. Hollar, Jr. (MCSN: 439350), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while attached to an anti-tank unit of the FIRST Marine Division during combat with enemy Japanese forces on Cape Gloucester, New Britain on January 1, 1944. Voluntarily scouting with a comrade deep into jungle territory and discovering enemy troops preparing defensive positions, Private Hollar immediately returned to his own unit and courageously led a patrol against the hostile forces inflicting several casualties. Later, while again engaging the enemy with vigorous fire, he succeeded in killing two of the Japanese before he himself, was fatally wounded by hostile snipers. Private Hollar’s daring initiative and selfless devotion to duty in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
