Navy Federal Credit Union

Carl Hoffman entered the Marine Corps in 1940 via the Platoon Leaders Class, and was commissioned as a second lieutenant in 1942. During World War two he earned the Silver Star and was twice wounded. He retired as a U.S. Marine Corps Major General in 1978.

    The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Carl W. Hoffman (MCSN: 0-9472), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of Company G, Second Battalion, Eighth Marines, SECOND Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands from 15 June to 8 July 1944. Landing with his company on the right flank of the Division, Captain Hoffman braved intense artillery and mortar fire to reorganize his men for their assault on enemy beach positions and for securing contact with the unit on his right. L at dawn the following day, he resumed the attack and, personally directing the company in the face of hostile fire, contributed directly to the accomplishment of the initial mission on the mooring of the second day after landing. His courage, leadership and devotion to duty throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
