The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Alvin E. Hebert (MCSN: 494937), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Squad Leader of Company F, Second Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands on 2 May 1945. Undaunted by a constant hail of hostile small arms fire, Sergeant Hebert crawled a distance of about twenty-five yards to the aid of a wounded man lying in front of the enemy lines and succeeded in removing him to an area where first aid could be administered. His outstanding courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
