The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Sergeant Lloyd D. Hanna (MCSN: 303999), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Second Battalion, Twenty-second Marines, First Provisional Marine Brigade, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands on 27 July and 2 August 1944. When his platoon leader was wounded by a withering hail of heavy enemy machine gun and mortar fire Sergeant Hanna unhesitatingly assumed command of the group and quickly reorganizing the men, pressed home a vigorous assault with outstanding tactical skill and succeeded in capturing the hostile objective. Engaged on a subsequent hazardous patrol mission he courageously established initial contact with the Japanese by voluntarily taking a position in the point of his platoon and, although fatally wounded by the enemy grenades, continued his relentless search for hostile emplacements, issuing timely warnings which safeguarded the main body of his patrol. L Sergeant Hanna’s inspiring leadership and valiant devotion to duty in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
