The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal William H. Hall (MCSN: 414251), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Battery F, Second Battalion, Fourteenth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Tinian, Mariana Islands on 24 July 1944. Undeterred by flying shrapnel and the possibility of explosions when an ammunition dump suffered a direct hit by a hostile shell, Corporal Hall unhesitatingly risked his life to extinguish the raging fire, thereby saving not only a large portion of the ammunition but also the lives of his comrades. His initiative, cool courage and unyielding devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Corporal Hall and the United States Naval Service.
