The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain Frank H. Haigler, Jr. (MCSN: 0-11308), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of Company L, Third Battalion, Twenty-second Marines, SIXTH Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces at Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands on 11 June 1945. Charged with the mission of enveloping the precipitous Hill 53, Captain Haigler maneuvered his company around the enemy’s left flank and into a position for the assault in the face of intense enemy fire. Although he knew that the company on his left had encountered strong resistance and could not assist, he led his company in an assault upon the lifting of covering fire which resulted in the successful seizure of the important terrain feature, thus hastening the conclusion of the battle for Oroku Peninsula His aggressiveness and indomitable fighting spirit served as a constant inspiration to his company thereby reflecting the highest credit upon Captain Haigler and the United States Naval Service.
