The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Faust L. Groccia (MCSN: 502884), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the Third Battalion, Twenty-Fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 18 June 1944. Courageous and aggressive in the face of terrific fire from Japanese guns, Private First Class Groccia rendered valiant service throughout the invasion and occupation of this strategically important island and, by his technical skill and outstanding conduct contributed materially to the success of a vital campaign pointing toward further victories over the Japanese. On 18 June 1944, his company suffered severe casualties and was forced to withdraw slightly, leaving several wounded men at the front. Private First Class Groccia volunteered to take a stretcher and evacuate the wounded Marines but, returning with the first man, was killed by Japanese riflemen. His self-sacrificing devotion to duty and heroic fighting spirit were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
