The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Second Lieutenant Richard A. Griswold (MCSN: 0-32891), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Replacement Officer of the Second Battalion, Twenty-sixth Marines, FIFTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Iwo Jima, Volcano Islands, from 3 to 13 March 1945. When all the officers of a rifle company became casualties, Second Lieutenant Griswold assumed command in the face of strong hostile resistance and, by his constant presence in the front lines and coolness under fire, encouraged his men in renewed assaults against the Japanese forces. Leading his company in attack after attack on an almost impenetrable defense on 12 March, he inspired his men to break through the enemy positions. His indomitable fighting spirit, determination and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
