The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Major Bernard W. Green (MCSN: 0-7435), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as Commanding Officer of the First Battalion, Fourth Marines (Reinforced), First Provisional Marine Brigade, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, 22 July 1944. When his battalion was engaged in holding an extremely difficult front of twelve hundred yards in the Mount Alifan sector, Major Green kept his command post in operation even after a fanatical enemy attack broke through the line and succeeded in overrunning the post. Successfully employing a reserve company and a platoon of tanks sent to his assistance, he directed an attack which killed three hundred of the hostile force and reestablished the line. By his outstanding ability in controlling his battalion, he contributed materially to the subsequent seizure of the beachhead and the continuance of the attack the following day. His courageous leadership and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Major Green and the United States Naval Service.
