The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Marvin Francis Goins (MCSN: 302325), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the SECOND Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces at Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, November 22, 1943. Operating under terrific enemy fire, Corporal Goins unhesitatingly risked his life by crawling to a Japanese emplacement which had been holding up the advance of his platoon and put it out of action with TNT blocks and bangalore torpedoes. In subsequent action on the same day he was fatally wounded. His courageous fighting spirit and outstanding fortitude in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
