The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Albert E. Goguen (MCSN: 293025), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company M, Third Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Cape Gloucester, New Britain, on 14 January 1944. Climbing an exceptionally steep hill covered with dense undergrowth. Corporal Goguen led his machine gun section against a determined and well-entrenched enemy and, on one occasion, moved in front of a line of our forces who were momentarily pinned down by hostile fire. When his gunner was wounded on reaching the top of the hill, Corporal Goguen manned the weapon and kept it in action until another gunner reached the position and, succeeded in establishing and holding a position from which his section was able to gain fire superiority over the enemy. His inspiring leadership and unwavering devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
