The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Joseph O. Goble (MCSN: 300062), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity during action against enemy Japanese forces on Guadalcanal, Solomon Islands on October 9, 1942. Acting ass Platoon Sergeant of the Third Platoon, Company B, First Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, who were fiercely engaged in a battle at a point west of the Katanikau River, Sergeant Goble observed that his company was receiving heavy mortal and machinegun fire from a wooded draw to the right of his position. With utter disregard for his own personal safety, he stood on a bare, exposed ridge and courageously directed fire of the rifle grenadiers of his platoon until the guns of the Japanese position were silenced. Later, during the same action, he rushed forward across a heavily shelled area and received a severe wound while dragging a seriously wounded comrade to a place of safety. His heroic conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
