The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private John A. Gilboy (MCSN: 540469), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company B, First Battalion, Twenty-fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Tinian, Mariana Islands, 24 July 1944. Soon after his company had landed, Private First Class Gilboy spotted a hostile machine gun crew attempting to set up their weapon and fire on incoming landing craft. Despite the extreme personal danger involved, he courageously and voluntarily went forward and, delivering accurate fire on the enemy with his automatic rifle, succeeded in annihilating the hostile crew. By his valiant action, initiative and devotion to duty, Private First Class Gilboy upheld the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
