The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant Julian H. Garvin, Jr. (MCSN: 382594), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company E, Second Battalion, Twenty-Fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Tinian Island, Marianas Group, 25 July 1944. Wounded by a mortar shell fragment which struck him over the eye during the initial assault of a Japanese counterattack, Sergeant Garvin, although temporarily blinded, refused evacuation and remained in the line to assist his platoon leader in directing the fire of the platoon and, personally occupying a gap in the line created by the evacuation of two wounded men, consented to leave only when the counterattack was completely broken and the situation secure. His heroism, perseverance and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
