The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal George E. Friddle (MCSN: 395365), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Headquarters Company, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, on 19 September 1944. When his company sustained severe casualties during an advance through a series of broken and confusing ridges, Corporal Friddle voluntarily climbed to an unprotected ridge and, undeterred by hostile observation and heavy fire, signaled the position of his flank to friendly units. Wounded during this hazardous undertaking, he remained at his post until certain that friendly troops had understood his signals. Apprising both units of the other’s position, he was instrumental in making possible greater coordination of both units in the subsequent attack. His initiative, coolness under fire and courageous action reflect great credit on Corporal Friddle and the United States Naval Service.
