The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class George J. Fox (MCSN: 344662), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company K, Third Battalion, Eighth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Tarawa, Gilbert Islands, from 20 to 22 November 1943. When the Wave Commander’s boat on which he was embarked received two direct hits which killed six Marines and wounded ten more during landing operations on D-day, Private First Class Fox fearlessly made his way to the beach and, boldly exposing himself to the enemy’s concentrated mortar, machine-gun and sniper fire, assisted in the expeditious reorganization of his company by acting as runner and guide. Determined and courageous during numerous attacks against hostile dugouts and pillboxes throughout the next few days of action, he fought furiously in neutralizing many strong points and, during a critical stage of the battle, contributed to the reduction of a bombproof shelter after participating in three violent strikes against the heavily-fortified strong point. His daring initiative, dauntless perseverance and indomitable fighting spirit, maintained through the fierce hostilities were essential factors in the success of the operation and reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Fox and the United States Naval Service.
