The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Hervey T. Fisher (MCSN: 361911), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Cape Gloucester, New Britain, on 10 January 1944. Courageous and loyal in his determination to rescue a Wounded Marine, Private First Class Fisher advanced under enemy fire so intense that he was forced to dig with his bare hands behind a log as he worked his way forward with a companion. During this action, the two men silenced and captured a Japanese machine gun which had been causing heavy casualties to his unit and finally succeeded in rescuing the injured Marine. By his personal valor, his cool disregard for his own safety and his gallant fighting spirit, Private First Class Fisher contributed greatly to the success of the attack. His fearless conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
