The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private First Class Charles W. Fenger (MCSN: 345086), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Pioneer battalion, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Peleliu, Palau Islands, 15 September 1944. When a group of the enemy infiltrated and raked the dump area with machine-gun and rifle fire during the initial stages of landing on White Beach, Private First Class Fenger coolly continued his task of unloading urgently needed ammunition just seventy-five yards back of the front lines and in full view of the enemy and, although repeatedly warned to take cover, carried on courageously until mortally wounded. His self-sacrificing spirit and courageous devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Private First Class Fenger and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
