The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Geoffrey L. Fanning (MCSN: 857403), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company G, Second Battalion, Ninth Marines, THIRD Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Guam, Mariana Islands, July 25, 1944. When his company moved forward at dark during the assault on Fonte Hill, Private First Class Fanning voluntarily remained behind and, guarding three wounded men throughout the night despite exposure to constant enemy rifle and mortar fire, killed five Japanese snipers who approached his position. His cool courage, determination and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
