The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Rawland T. Faller (MCSN: 980668), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Headquarters Company, First Battalion, Fifth Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands, May 8, 1945. When his unit was pinned down by a heavy enemy machine-gun and mortar barrage, Private Faller exposed himself to the hostile fire to make his way to the enemy positions well in front of our lines, and set demolition charges which resulted in the destruction of two Japanese machine guns, one mortar and the closing of several caves from which enemy snipers had been firing. By his outstanding courage he enabled his comrades to advance to their objective with a minimum of casualties, and his devotion to duty was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
