The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Clyde R. Eudy (MCSN: 470645), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the First Battalion, Third Marines, THIRD Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces at Empress Augusta Bay, Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on November 1, 1945. When an infantry battalion was subjected to intense hostile fire during unloading operations, Private First Class Eudy unhesitatingly volunteered to advance beyond the beachhead and attempt to silence the enemy gun emplacements. Despite a withering hail of hostile machine-gun and rifle fire, he courageously proceeded beyond the foremost elements of combat troops and, with several comrades, attacked and destroyed seven vital enemy positions, killing fourteen Japanese and driving out numerous others. By his daring initiative, he and his companions were able to capture hostile documents containing valuable military information for our forces. Private First class Eudy’s aggressive fighting spirit and valiant conduct in the face of grave peril were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
