Commander in Chief, Pacific: Serial 260 (February 1, 1945)

The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Private Herbert Ericson, Jr. (MCSN: 531977), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Rifleman with the Second Battalion, Twenty-Fourth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan Island, Mariana Islands, from 5 to 7 July 1944. Courageous and aggressive in the face of terrific Japanese opposition, Private Ericson repeatedly volunteered as scout for his platoon during cleaning-up operations on isolated points of enemy resistance behind the front lines. Although mortally wounded on 7 July while preceding the others into a thickly wooded area, he steadfastly refused medical aid and accurately pointed out the exact location of the enemy weapon to his platoon leader. By his outstanding initiative and resolute devotion to duty in the face of grave peril, Private Ericson contributed materially to the success of a vital mission. His unselfish spirit and valiant conduct throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
