The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to First Lieutenant William R. Epperson (MCSN: 0-15892), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity as a Platoon Leader of Company F, Second Battalion, Sixth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 15 June 1944. When his company’s right flank became exposed to hostile counterattack during the initial assault against enemy-held positions, First Lieutenant Epperson acted on his own initiative to lead a section of machine guns across open ground to a position from which he could best protect his unit. Twice, driven back by hostile fire, he persisted in his mission, returning both times to deliver furious counter-fire with his own weapons and killing or dispersing the Japanese threatening his company. Constantly under enemy fire while rallying his men, First Lieutenant Epperson was fatally wounded. His courage, inspiring leadership and aggressive fighting spirit throughout this action reflect the highest credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
