The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Sergeant William J. Dreyer (MCSN: 432798), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Company G, Second Battalion, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan Island, Marianas Group, on 20 June 1944. After his company had assumed a defensive position for the night, Sergeant Dreyer left his outpost in the face of the enemy’s advance to warn his platoon of the impending attack. In spite of serious wounds suffered by enemy fire in the ensuing action, he aided his comrades in repulsing the attack. His cool courage, aggressive determination and gallant devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
