The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private George T. Davis (MCSN: 467451), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with the THIRD Marine Division during action against enemy Japanese forces in the Cape Torokina Area, Bougainville, Solomon Islands, on December 15, 1943. Voluntarily risking his life in an attempt to rescue a wounded comrade lying within a strongly defended enemy position, Private Davis hastily discarded his equipment and, with a companion, crawled to the side of the injured man despite a constant rain of intense hostile automatic weapons and rifle fire. Discovering that the Marine had succumbed to his wounds, Private Davis returned to his own lines and reported the death to his commanding officer. His courageous initiative, daring aggressiveness and great personal valor in the face of grave peril served as an inspiring example to his comrades and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
