The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private Robert S. Dalrymple (MCSN: 363200), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity during action against enemy Japanese forces in the Solomon Islands Area on November 3, 1942. Acting as a scout for Company D, First Battalion, Second Marines, Reinforced, Private Dalrymple, along with two other men, made contact with the enemy and came under vigorous fire from hostile machine guns, artillery and rifles. Knocking the Japanese completely out by means of hand grenades and rifle fire, he and his comrades compelled them to withdraw, leaving behind four pieces of artillery which were captured. Although he was wounded in the engagement, Private Dalrymple persisted in his firing until the Japanese fell back and were completely out of his line of vision. His heroic conduct was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
