The President of the United States of America takes pride in presenting the Silver Star (Posthumously) to Corporal Alton B. Collins (MCSN: 915312), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Leader of a Rifle Squad of Company F, Second Battalion, Seventh Marines, FIRST Marine Division in action against enemy Japanese forces on Okinawa, Ryukyu Islands on 11 May 1945. Waging an assault on heavily defended Dakeshi Ridge, Corporal Collins led his squad with courageous initiative constantly exposing himself to the merciless barrage of machine gun fire pouring out from enemy held caves and cleverly concealed emplacements in a determined attempt to force a break in the Japanese defenses. Although wounded b small arms fire during the bitter exchange of hostilities, he refused to be evacuated, resolutely returning to his squad after receiving first aid. Undaunted by the heavy machine gun and mortar fire, he continued the battle against fierce opposition and moving along the line to direct his men in the attack persevered in his aggressive tactics until he fell mortally wounded. By his daring leadership and personal valor in the face of tremendous odds, Corporal Collins had succeeded in overrunning and destroying several enemy strong points and his tactical skill and indomitable fighting spirit throughout reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Naval Service. He gallantly gave his life for his country.
