    The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918, takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Captain (Infantry) Hershel O. Ryan, United States Army, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action while serving as a Helicopter Pilot with Company A, 227th Aviation Battalion, 1st Cavalry Division, in action against the enemy in the Republic of Vietnam. Captain Ryan distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous action on 9 February 1968, while serving as a flight leader of a team of armed helicopters during a combat support mission near the Suoi Ca River Valley, Republic of Vietnam. While participating in the movement of troops into enemy controlled terrain, Captain Ryan’s flight encountered intense hostile fire. Although his helicopter received several hits and he was seriously wounded. Captain Ryan diagnosed the tactical situation and immediately began directing evasive actions for the remainder of the flight. His gallant action is in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, and the United States Army.
