The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal Americo M. Beneziano (MCSN: 288352), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as a Wireman of the First Battalion, First Marines, FIRST Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces during the assault on enemy-held Peleliu, Palau Islands, 21 September 1944. Volunteering to establish urgently needed communications with the front line companies who were defending coral ridges covered with dense undergrowth, Corporal Beneziano worked his way forward in complete darkness under continuous hostile sniper fire and an intense mortar barrage. Although severely wounded by shrapnel before reaching the front, he continued forward and completed his mission and provided communications which were highly essential throughout a night of repeated enemy counterattacks. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
