Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific: Serial 00435-45 (February 12, 1945)

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class George W. Batchelor (MCSN: 551009), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity in action against enemy forces on Peleliu Island, Palau Group, on 19 September 1944. Private First Class Batchelor was acting as a platoon runner when his platoon leader was killed, just at dusk. Although not ordered or expected to do so, Private First Class Batchelor climbed a high ridge to the most exposed point of his company’s position, where violent fighting was in progress. With complete disregard for his personal safety, he rallied the defenders of this ridge and engaged the counterattacking enemy with grenades and in hand-to-hand combat throughout the night. His aggressive fighting spirit was the determining factor in inspiring the few remaining men to defend the bitterly contested ridge. His bravery was outstanding and was in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
