Commanding General, Fleet Marine Force Pacific: Serial 8631

The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Corporal George T. Barsda (MCSN: 867854), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Battery E, Second Battalion, Tenth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 16 June 1944. Voluntarily braving constant enemy shellfire, Corporal Barsda risked his life to follow his Battery Commander into an exploding and blazing ammunition dump set aflame by enemy shellfire. Successful in isolating and extinguishing the blaze in the main dump, he then bravely aided in burying individual rounds which had been blown clear of the dump. His courage and devotion to duty reflect the highest credit upon Corporal Barsda and the United States Naval Service.
