The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Leo S. Andrews (MCSN: 482014), United States Marine Corps Reserve, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving with Headquarters and Service Company, Second Battalion, Tenth Marines, SECOND Marine Division, in action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, on 20 June 1944. Voluntarily entering a blazing dump containing large quantities of explosives, artillery and mortar ammunition, Private First Class Andrews courageously attempted to isolate and extinguish the blaze until serious injuries necessitated his evacuation. His courage and devotion to duty were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
