The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Private First Class Robert J. Adams (MCSN: 287745), United States Marine Corps, for conspicuous gallantry and intrepidity while serving as Loader of a Self-Propelled 75-mm. Gun in Regimental Weapons Company, Twenty-fifth Marines, FOURTH Marine Division, during action against enemy Japanese forces on Saipan, Mariana Islands, 16 June 1944. Unhesitatingly approaching a half-track enveloped in flames from burning gasoline, Private First Class Adams fearlessly disregarded exploding ammunition and heavy hostile fire to effect the rescue of a gunner who had been blown from the half-track when it received a direct enemy hit. His fortitude, initiative and courage throughout were in keeping with the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
