The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Bronze Star Medal with Combat “V” to Major Kevin J. Watkinson, United States Marine Corps Reserve, for heroic achievement in connection with combat operations against the enemy as the G-3 Operations Advisor, Military Transition Team, 1st Iraqi Division in support of Operation IRAQI FREEDOM from 2 May 2005 to 12 February 2006. During this period, Major Watkinson directly contributed to the development of the 1st Iraqi Division staff and supported the deployment and support of the Division’s subordinate units across Iraq. Placed in support of the advisor team for 3d Brigade from 1 October 2005 to 12 February 2006, he made critical contributions to the success of the brigade’s combat operations in the Habbaniyah area. He participated in combat patrols and operations with the Iraqi combat formations, constantly exposing himself to enemy improvised explosive devices and mortar, rocket, and small arms fire. On 13 October 2005, Major Watkinson exposed himself to enemy fire by occupying a High-Mobility Multipurpose Wheeled Vehicle turret in order to direct aviation attacks in support of an engaged Iraqi company. These actions, taken at personal risk, resulted in the neutralization of the enemy force. On 29 December 2005, again with disregard for his personal safety, Major Watkinson led a small reaction force through dangerous enemy terrain in order to assist a heavily engaged Iraqi unit. Under the superb leadership of Major Watkinson, the small reaction force braved numerous improvised explosive devices and forced the insurgents to withdraw. By his zealous initiative, courageous actions, and exceptional dedication to duty, Major Watkinson reflected great credit upon himself and upheld the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service. (Major Watkinson is authorized to wear the Combat “V”.)
