The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross to Sergeant John R. Coates, United States Air Force, for extraordinary achievement while participating in aerial flight as an AC-119K Aerial Gunner in Southwest Asia on 28 May 1971. On that date, Sergeant Coates and his crew were directed to attack a heavily defended supply route. Despite intense anti-aircraft fire and unexpected aircraft maneuvers, Sergeant Coates exhibited superior airmanship and courage in providing continuous firepower, resulting in the damage and destruction of thirteen hostile supply vehicles. The professional competence, aerial skill, and devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Coates reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
