The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Airman Second Class Otto P. Mertz, Jr. (AFSN: AF-13500773), United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life at Hickam Air Force Base, Territory of Hawaii, on 18 January 1956. On that date, when an individual who was attempting to hook up the electrical connection to the main booster pump of a C-124A, was overcome by the fumes of the number 11 fuel tank, Airman Mertz immediately responded to the emergency. Airman Mertz, in total disregard for his own preservation, entered the fume-filled tank and although later overcome by the gaseous elements, with the assistance of another volunteer, moved the unconscious victim to a position where rescue could be effected by others. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Airman Mertz reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
