Department of the Air Force, General Orders No. 49 (August 17, 1956)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pleasure in presenting the Soldier’s Medal to Master Sergeant Dwayne R. Todd (AFSN: AF-6291041), United States Air Force, for heroism involving voluntary risk of life on 26 February 1956 at McGuire Air Force Base, New Jersey. On that date, when an F-86-D crash landed on take-off and burst into flames, Sergeant Todd immediately rushed to the scene to render assistance. Although warned that the burning aircraft was fully loaded with fuel and rockets which were in imminent danger of exploding, Sergeant Todd unhesitatingly made his way to the cockpit to extricate the injured pilot from the raging conflagration. With total disregard for his own preservation, Sergeant Todd persevered in his humanitarian efforts until finally, with the aid of other volunteers, he succeeded in rescuing the unconscious victim. The exemplary courage and heroism displayed by Sergeant Todd reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Air Force.
