The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Staff Sergeant [then Sergeant] Robert Livingston Clark, United States Marine Corps, for heroism while serving at the American Embassy, Seoul, South Korea on 21 January 1975. Upon arrival at the scene of a fire in a nearby apartment complex, Staff Sergeant Clark, with complete disregard for his own safety and fully aware of the danger involved, attempted to enter the burning building to effect a rescue of a trapped occupant. He tried repeatedly to reach the occupant but was driven back by the intense heat, smoke, and flames. Although unsuccessful in his endeavors to save another’s life, Staff Sergeant Clark’s courageous and selfless actions in the face of grave personal risk reflected great credit upon himself and were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and the United States Naval Service.
