The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Aviation Electrician’s Mate Airman David Keith Chapman, United States Navy, for heroism while serving at Naval Air Reserve Unit (NARU), Memphis, Tennessee on 4 April 1982. Upon hearing the cries of fire, Airman Chapman awoke at 0630 to find a distraught mother and child clinging to a ledge outside their bedroom window badly burned and screaming for help. Airman Chapman caught the child which the mother dropped into his arms. Then upon learning that another child was trapped in the burning building and with complete disregard for his own safety and fully aware of the personal dangers involved, Airman Chapman unhesitatingly ran into the burning building in search of the child. Driven back three times by the intense heat and smoke, he finally groped his way upstairs to a bedroom where he found the child and carried him to safety. He immediately administered CPR to the child until firemen arrived on the scene. By his courageous and prompt actions in the face of great personal risk, Airman Chapman undoubtedly saved the child’s life; thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
