The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Private First Class James F. Bonney, United States Marine Corps, for heroism while serving with Marine Wing Headquarters Squadron ONE, Marine Corps Air Station, Futenma, Okinawa, Japan. On 10 September 1977 while on liberty in Ginowan City, Private First Class Bonney and a fellow Marine proceeded to the Kitamae Seawall to observe the after effects of Typhoon BABE. As they were observing the waves breaking on the seawall, Private First Class Bonney observed an exceptionally large wave sweep his friend from the wall. Unhesitatingly and with complete disregard for his own safety, Private First Class Bonney, assisted by another Marine, attempted to reach into the turbulent waters and pull his friend to safety. As their rescue attempt began, another large wave struck, sweeping both men into the water. Ensuing attempts by civilian and fire rescue personnel managed to pull Private First Class Bonney and another Marine from the water. His courageous and selfless actions in attempting the rescue were in keeping with the highest traditions of the Marine Corps and of the United States Naval Service.
