Louis Magill graduated from the U.S. Naval Academy at Annapolis, Class of 1893. He served in Cuba during the Spanish-American War, the Philippine Islands, and Haiti. As Colonel, he was Officer in Charge of the Eastern Recruiting Division in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, until his sudden death on February 20, 1921. One of Colonel Magill’s last official acts was the presentation of the Navy Medal of Honor to Charles F. Hoffman for his World War I heroism. Louis Magill never received the Brevet Medal, which was authorized for award and for which the medal a struck. Magill died before the award could be presented, and since Brevet Medals were not awarded posthumously, his medal was not forwarded to his next of kin, but rather was placed on exhibition in the National Museum.
