The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Navy and Marine Corps Medal to Data Systems Technician First Class David Warren Beach, United States Navy, for heroism while serving at the Center for War Gaming, Naval War College, Newport, Rhode Island on 21 July 1980. Upon hearing screams from onlookers that a boy was in trouble at Easton’s Beach in Newport and fully conscious of the strong current in the area, Petty Officer Beach unhesitatingly plunged into the water and swam toward the victim. Upon reaching the unconscious boy, Petty Officer Beach began administering mouth-to-mouth resuscitation while supporting both himself and the boy with the current sweeping them seaward. Both were subsequently assisted to shore by lifeguards and floatation gear. Petty Officer Beach’s courageous and prompt action in the face of great personal risk undoubtedly saved the boy’s life; thereby reflecting great credit upon himself and upholding the highest traditions of the United States Naval Service.
