The President of the United States of America takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Surfman Daniel James Tarr, United States Coast Guard, for gallantry in action as a boat coxswain on 7 August 1942, during the landing of Tulagi Island in the first assault wave. Surfman Tarr made repeated trips in spite of heavy enemy fire to effect landing of equipment, troops, ammunition, and supplies. On 8 September he made a landing against a Japanese force at Taivu Point, Guadalcanal, thereby materially contributing to the successful operations in which the enemy were defeated.
