Headquarters, 9th Infantry Division, General Orders No. 1498 (May 30, 1967)

The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress July 9, 1918 (amended by an act of July 25, 1963), takes pleasure in presenting the Silver Star to Staff Sergeant Robert G. Wise (ASN: RA-12647510), United States Army, for gallantry in action involving conflict with an armed hostile force while serving with Company C, 5th Battalion, 60th Infantry Regiment, 9th Infantry Division, in the Republic of Vietnam. Staff Sergeant Wise distinguished himself by exceptionally valorous actions on 2 May 1967, during Operation HOPTAC in the Ap Bac Secret Zone, Republic of Vietnam, when he led a skeleton crew of nine Armored Personnel Carriers to reinforce an infantry unit. Upon arriving at the camp, Sergeant Wise ran from track to track directing them into offensive positions and pointing out enemy targets. Intense automatic and small arms fire continuously raked his position, but Sergeant Wise continued his dangerous task, re-supplying his vehicles and ground forces that were in the area. Sergeant Wise’s courage and devotion to duty were instrumental in maintaining high morale among his men and he inspired them to engage and overcome the enemy. Staff Sergeant Wise’s heroic actions in close combat with a hostile force are in keeping with the highest traditions of the military service and reflect great credit upon himself, his unit, the 9th Infantry Division, and the United States Army.
