The President of the United States of America, authorized by Act of Congress, July 2, 1926, takes pride in presenting the Distinguished Flying Cross with Combat “V” (Posthumously) to Sergeant Donald W. Sang (ASN: 32767945), United States Army Air Forces, for heroism while participating in aerial flight as a Tail Gunner assigned to the 734th Bombardment Squadron, 453d Bombardment Group, EIGHTH Air Force, during a combat mission over Germany on 21 July 1944. On that date, Sergeant Sang risked his own life above and beyond the call of duty. While flying at 25,000 feet over Germany, Sergeant Sang and the 453d Bombardment Group ran into fog and poor visibility, disabling the pilots to properly view what was around their aircraft causing Sergeant Sang’s aircraft to collide with another aircraft from his group. After the planes collided Sergeant Sang helped the Waist Gunner with his parachute and then said, “I will be right behind you,” as the waist gunner jumped out of the aircraft. It is unknown why Sergeant Sang never got out of the aircraft in time. It is believed Sergeant Sang was helping the Radio Operator/Waist Gunner with his parachute. The eyewitnesses of German civilians confirmed seeing two men approximately 200 meters (650 feet) above the ground, jump from an aircraft. One of those two men was identified as Sergeant Sang with the Radio Operator/Waist Gunner in which their parachutes failed to open. The outstanding heroism and selfless devotion to duty displayed by Sergeant Sang in the devotion of his service to his country reflect great credit upon himself and the United States Army Air Corps.
