The President of the United States of America, in the name of Congress, takes pleasure in presenting the Medal of Honor to First Lieutenant (Cavalry) William Preble Hall, United States Army, for extraordinary heroism on 20 October 1879, while serving with 5th U.S. Cavalry, in action near the Camp at White River, Colorado. With a reconnoitering party of three men, First Lieutenant Hall was attacked by 35 Indians and several times exposed himself to draw the fire of the enemy, giving his small party opportunity to reply with much effect.
